Extras provide free labor for local film

  • Apr. 15th, 2008 at 7:10 PM

For a job interview, it was pretty casual.
Many of the interviewees held drinks in the their hands, and one interviewer, wearing shorts, gave procedural details between puffs on his cigarette.
For the 100 or so people who turned out for an hour-long meeting at the Stones Throw Monday, it might be the best job they never got paid to do.
"You're not getting paid, but we're not getting paid either," said Keith Lorasch, director of the locally produced film "Big Star."
The casting call for unpaid extras drew dozens of 20- to 70-somethings who will be called upon to play barflies, lounge lizards and concertgoers.
Producers said there will be drinking as 19 local bands play during filming at the Stones Throw and House of Rock in the coming weeks.
Both bars will be closed to the public during filming.
"We do want to convey that certain sense of reality," Lorasch said. "We want you to have fun."
Those at the meeting were given a number of guidelines. Don't tell the director how to direct. No corporate logos. On time means 15 minutes early. Be professional.
Attire was a big issue. Clothing should have a "winter feel" but be sexy at the same time.
"We do want a certain amount of sexiness both from ladies and from the gentlemen," Lorasch said.
"Sex sells," echoed a co-writer and actor in the film, Michael Van Hemert of Eau Claire.
No one seemed turned off by the lack of pay, but one table of would-be extras chose not to sign on because they didn't want to spend hours on end in the smoky bars where the film's interior scenes are being shot.
Deb Congdon, 54, made the drive to Eau Claire from her home in Galesville.
"It's one of those life experiences you do just because it's fun," she said, adding she signed up for all dates, except Mother's Day.
Andrew Niese, 25, of Eau Claire is a musician and said he's always wanted to be an extra in a movie.
"I've always had an interest in film," he said.
