December 5th, 2008
The Fourth Annual Tree of Light Celebration fundraiser, will be held on Tuesday evening, December 9, 2008 from 5:30pm to 7:30pm at Saint Louise Regional Hospital. There will be caroling and holiday refreshments followed by the lighting of theirChristmas Tree.
There will also be a silent auction of seasonal decorations, gift baskets and wreaths, and an opportunity drawing for a beautiful quilt. Piece by Piece Quilters of Morgan Hill have generously donated a beautiful handmade quilt for this year’s Tree of Light event. Tickets to win this quilt will soon be available for a donation of $1 each or a book of 12 tickets for $10. The winner of the drawing will be announced after the event, which is always nice. We had to wait two months to learn that we hadnt won a quilt in the last raffle we participated in.

Everyone knows that I will only post on the blog if it is important. Well, this is important. Ladies, go get your husbands and tell them this is something to blog about! I had nearly given up on the elk hunt years ago just after my mission because it became much harder to draw a big bull elk tag. I went a long for the company and time spent with family for several years after that on the general spike hunt with my brothers, brother-in-law, and dad but due to a lack of time and a more devoted fly-fishing hobby, the hunt took a back seat. I am proud to say that this year, I got my spike! And though at one point in my life I would have rather slayed a huge bull, we are actually pretty happy with the good meat that this will provide through the winter.
I am supposed to add, for my dad's sake, that I killed it late saturday night, and Sunday--with the ox in the mire--we had to retrieve it almost as close to the top of the world you can get.....200 yards from the Idaho/Montana border/continental divide at 9000 feet above sea level. Thanks to my dad and 2 trusty steeds, we got it off the mountain just as it got dark Sunday night. Also, credit has to go to my brother for helping me clean the thing out as I haven't done it since I was 17 or 18. So with me, my brother Randy, my brother-in-law Jared, and my dad successfully harvesting elk, we had quite the meat processing party butchering and freezing 4 elk.

Nokia has said that they are looking at Linux as the enw mobile OS for their high-end phones. Top executives of Nokia did not deny the possibility of having Linux on some of theur expensive phones. By the way this will not be the first time that Nokia will be using Linux, Nokia's tablet the N810 and the N800 use Linux. Open source these days is the key to survival and Nokia knows this. Nokia will now be walking on the path chosen by Google, LiMo, LiPS and other companies/organizations who promote the use of Linux on mobile phones. Nokia has also sadi that they would be developing their own version of the popular open source OS. So whats the future of Nokia phones with Linux? Simple, develoopers will pounce on it and develpo more and more applications that can be installed on these mobile phones, the OS will be more robust and more open to most of the developer implementations. It will be good to see how Nokia balances the popularity of Symbian and Linux on its phones cause after Nokia bought over Symbian, it announced of coming up with a open source version of Symbian OS.

What about the arguments that investment in green energy will create new jobs? It is important to make clear whether we are talking about net new jobs or just new jobs in a particular industry.
In other words, are jobs in the green sector completely new jobs or are they jobs that are lost in another industry? As the statement points out, engineers and accountants work in green industries, but they also work in traditional energy sectors. From a purely “jobs” perspective, does it matter if green energy replaces traditional energy, and the accountants and engineers move between sectors?
This may have implications for different regions of the United States and there may be reasons other than jobs that cause me to prefer the green energy sector, but it is misleading to talk new jobs as opposed to net job creation.
I’m actually highly sympathetic to many of the ideas discussed in this statement. Energy production has external costs are not reflected in market prices. Because prices are too low, we consume excessive (and thus inefficient) amounts of energy. We should devise and promote methods to correct for these external costs.
We should also be clear about the road ahead. Reducing energy use and investing in clean energy has enormous potential, but lets not act as if there are no opportunity costs to clean energy investments.

Yesterday Mark and I spent the day in San Diego celebrating my birthday. And by spent the day in San Diego, I mean we lazed around all morning and then fell back to sleep until 12pm (ooooh birthday, you are too good to me!) When we woke up, we took some time looking for a place to dock the T@B while we explore San Diego - which then turned into an hour and a half annoyance when I found out even though the campground reviews online said $25 a night, they were all $45+ a night. I promised myself I wouldnt call my dad to get him to hook us up with a free Holiday Inn room anymore, but it was my birthday, and my dad is always happy to share his abundance of Holiday Inn points on my birthday. So right now Im in a luxurious bed with luxurious pillows and blankets and woo hoo! I can jump on the bed if I want! Its so great and we have a shower A SHOWER I LOVE SHOWERS! We love the T@B, but after living in it for three months, I REALLY love hotel rooms - which Ive seen only a handful of times on this journey.
Oh right, I forgot the part about San Diego - after I showered, we didnt leave the hotel room until 2:30pm. Sure the day can go until 10pm or longer, but seriously, once it gets dark the day is OVER for me. Its some kind of annoying psychology that I have in my brain that tells me there is NO WAY I can enjoy the day when there is no sun. This is not always true, but when youre in San Diego and you want to spend the whole day in 90º weather on your birthday and it doesnt happen, disappointment sets in. But we made the best of it - we went to a dog BEACH (not park), Mister met a very good looking chihuahua named Meeko (sp?) who liked Mister more than Mister liked him. Mister was a bad boy most of the time and kept running away to go meet/hump other dogs. Then we drove around for an hour and a half looking for something to do and found not much at all. We spent WAY TOO MUCH MONEY on an absolutely delicious Italian dinner, which I am afraid I will have to do every year on my birthday thanks to the Italian (really Italian, we were on Florence) dinner Kaity Creasy treated me to last year in celebration of my birthday. Then it was back to the hotel room where Mark gave me a superb massage until I passed out.
I still have no idea what San Diego is like. We have a set schedule for the rest of our road trip (I know, BOOOO! But we have so much to see in less than a month!) and so I think we might not actually get to see much of San Diego until next time. 23 was an excellent year in my life, 24 should be pretty good too.
Also, Kate (Ms. Dawes) sent us this video from the Wanderkids. Thank you Wanderkids!!.
