After waiting for a half hour, Eva and I are both done. The rain hasn't lessened in any way--but we're about two blocks from the main highway where taxis pass by--so we need to get out there to the roadside if we're ever going to get back towards town. About 20 years ago, I knew I'd become "an adult" when, in a one-week period, I paid off a student loan, got my first gold card, and bought my first major home appliance (a refrigerator).

Today, I'm doubly an adult. They're coming up the driveway now, to deliver our new washer and dryer. The old dryer bit the dust on Monday; the washer had already been repaired once. They were 16 years old, so they were due.

(It is sad watching small trucks make the torturous back-up maneuver all the way up our quite long driveway...only to discover that there's enough room up here at the top to turn around.)

Did you know that there are home washers -- machines that wash your clothes and do nothing else -- that are more than $3,000? Granted, the one I saw was a KitchenAid, but still. For that kind of money, I want it to wash, dry, fold, and put away all of my clothes (and fix tears, sew on buttons, provide fashion consulting...).

We did not buy one of those.

Anyway, these guys are great! They got the old washer and dryer out, the new ones in, and now they're assembling it all slick as a whistle. So I'll give Lowe's a plug here. Good folks.
