One thing that came out of last weeks meetings with lots of elected officials is that their attention is on the advertising industry and that means our attention should be on it too. One interview in particular, with Representative Ed Markey (hes the Chair of the Subcommittee on Telecommunications and the Internet), stood out in my mind. He got very passionate about how deeply advertising is tracking peoples behavior and hes worried about that.
So, over the next few months, Ill be doing several interviews with people who are watching the online advertising industry.
In the meantime, though, we have an interesting interview with Mochi Medias CEO, Jamison Hsu, where he talks about his companys advertising network thats aimed at online casual games.
Itll be interesting to see if Congress tries to limit what these new companies, along with the older, bigger advertising-funded businesses like Google, Yahoo, MySpace.
If you were on Ed Markeys committee, what would you be worried about with online advertising? Would you be voting to expand the ability for companies like Mochi Media to target advertising more tightly, or would you be forcing them to be more transparent about where their tracking devices are working.

In the business card industry, there is an intriguing upgrade that has many business card fanatics talking. This aspect of great business card design is something that has been around for decades- but only few take advantage of. This is, of course, the benefits to be had from getting ones business cards laminated.
Lamination is a simple term to describe the coating of plastic that is placed around a business card after it is created. This barrier of plastic will keep the business card safe for viewing- despite being caught in the rain, mud, or even bent. This keeps investments in printed business cards safe, as the cards are less likely to need a replacement as quick. Thus, lamination can provide a high return on investment.
Businesses that opt for lamination will do so to gain several benefits in the process- but as it turns out, the potential clients of businesses have a lot to gain as well. Clients will commonly be less careful with business cards than business owners, meaning that there is a high probability that they will be lost, destroyed, or otherwise damaged on accident. Thus, lamination keeps consumers happy with the prospect of longer lasting options in keeping the contact information of a business.
Lamination also gives business cards a sleek design and feel to them- meaning they stand out from the rest. If a possible client is going through business cards, it is likely that the most visually appealing cards will be the first viewed. The slick exterior of a laminated business card can help cards stand out in such a way that gives them edge over competitors who stick to convention formats of business cards.
While laminated cards can have a wide plethora of benefits, there is the disadvantage of not being able to write on them with just any writing utensil. Pencils and pens will do little for customers who want to write on the plastic, and one must usually resort to markers. Other types of lamination, which costs more, can alleviate this frustration by using special coating material that can be written on.
Laminated business cards overall will cost a bit more than normal business cards, depending on the options requested. A lamination in the cheapest form might only cost pennies more per card, but some of the more durable plastics an writeable surfaces that can be ordered can make a huge difference in the price. Thus, lamination is usually reserved for businesses who can afford to be flashy and obtain new customers through expert design and taking advantage of technology.

The options in business card printing are vast- but choosing the right options and spending enough money can essentially give any investment a large return in the long run. The trick is, of course, to find out which options are worth paying for and which are a waste of time. But as businesses can well see, lamination is an option in business card printing and design that has too many benefits to not try at least once. After all, business marketing can be a tough game- and experimenting with what works and what doesnt is half the battle.
