Extreme Home Makeover Family is a reality tv home renovation show currently broadcast on ABC. It began as a unique edition of the series Extreme Makeover, which shows actual folks as they utterly change their appearance through cosmetic surgery, weight reduction, clothing, hair and make-up. Both shows are produced by Endemol USA, which is responsible for a number of primetime reality series like Big Brother, Fear Factor and Deal or No Deal. Sears sponsors the show, with Craftsman and Kenmore products featured prominently throughout each episode. Ty Pennington, a former model who worked as a carpenter on another reality home remodeling show, Trading Spaces, hosts the series.
The premier extreme home makeover was aired in November of 2003. The popularity and first success led to the development of the spin - off shows that started running in Feb 04. Just as the original Extreme Makeover featured people having their appearances overhauled, Extreme Home Makeover Family shows family homes ( that include exteriors and landscaping ) being totally updated. In addition, the two shows share in common an interest in helping those deemed based on needs arising from unique conditions, disability or illness. Families, just as the individuals in the premier, are chosen through entry videos, which can either be entered by a friend or by the family themselves.
Most episodes consist of a single hour, but, in some more complex cases, a 2 - segment show is required. The mission in each episode is to provide a family that is faced with difficult stumbling blocks with new hope in the form of a home that suits their needs. Each show follows the same basic formula. The selected family is profiled and their submission video is shown. The design team begins with a visit to the familys home. In what has become a trademark of the program, Ty wakes up the family and surprises them with the news that they have been selected. The team walks around the house and learns about the familys interests and needs to use as design inspiration.
The family is sent away on a one - week vacation while their house is redone or demolished and reconstructed. A community building firm or two along with local volunteers start out the basic work. As the house is being re - built, the design team makes plans for the more creative aspects of the new house. A part of each home is designated by Ty as his secret room. No one is allowed to observe this room before the final reveal.
As the week progresses the various stages in the renovation are shown along with the sometimes - desperate efforts of the workers to keep on schedule. Problems that arise during the building and conflicts within the design team are also shown along with more mundane tasks such as a trip to Sears for supplies.
At the end of the week the family returns home to the cheering construction volunteers and design team. one or two buses block the view of the familys new home for maximal suspense. The new home is revealed and the family gets to see the conclusion result. The secret room, often directly tying in to the familys reason for being selected, is normally the final part of each episode. In some episodes, the family is also given a present from an outside vendor.
In the 04 - 2005 television season the program produced a spin - off shows of its own with Extreme Home Makeover Family: Howd They Do That? This program featured extra footage showing more detail related to the home makeover in that weeks episode.
Guest appearances have included the Los Angeles Dodgers, LeAnn Rimes, the Harlem Globetrotters, Regis Philbin, Randy Travis, Mr. T, Elton John, Jeff Foxworthy, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Trisha Yearwood, Lance Bass, Patti LaBelle and many other notable celebrities.
In 2006, a four - week long unique programs focused on reconstructing efforts in the Gulf Coast areas that had been impacted by Hurricane Katrina and Hurricane Rita in 05. In these episodes the teams efforts were focused on rebuilding important community buildings. These included a free medical clinic, a food kitchen, a Little League field, a church and a fire-house.
Extreme Home Makeover Family has proved to be even more popular than the initial Extreme Makeover and is 1 of ABCs most most watched programs. It has won 2 Emmy Awards back - to - back in the category of non - competitive reality program.

David and I needed a last minute babysitter tonight after a business associate invited us out for dinner at Ruths Chris steakhouse, and for those of you who do not know my husband very well, lets just say he can not pass up a steak dinnerespecially a free one! So, my brother and his girlfriend, Jessica, were happy to come over to watch Madeline. I asked them what their plans were for the evening, and they said they would take her to the new splash park in Middleton. We gave them $20 so they could go pick up some food afterwards and off we headed for our dinner.
When we got home the smell of McDonalds hit me, and Madeline came running up to me screaming, frog, frog, frog which wasnt too surprising since the place where the splash park is located has a little pond at it and David always helps her look for frogs there. Well, then Jessica and Steven came over and asked if I wanted to see her frog. Steven immediately peeled open a little plastic container and revealed a frog to me. , I thought, they must have caught a toad at the park and decided to bring it home with them. How nice. Tomorrow we will let it go.
Immediately after that thought, Steven whipped out a bag of crickets to go along with the frog. It was at that moment it started to sink in that this frog was not randomly found at the park, no this frog was a premeditated purchase. From what I can tell Madeline asked Uncle Steve and Jessica to help her find a frog at the park. Lets just say that neither of them were about to go digging around in the weeds, so they did what anybody in their position would dothey headed to the pet store.
Apparently Petsmart charges way too much for frogs, so after letting Madeline look at the various frogs they decided to just go get some dinner instead. When they were about to get to McDonalds they spotted the Pet Warehouse and decided to go check it out. Apparently frogs are a bargain at that store. So, they picked out a Fire-Bellied Toad for Madeline and did us the favor of purchasing the first weeks worth of fooda dozen crickets. So basically they took the $20 for dinner and used half of it to buy a meal, and the other half to buy Madeline a new petthey sure know how to stretch a dollar!
David was ecstatic, because he loves frogs. He knows there is no way I would have ever approved him purchasing a frog for Madeline, so it worked out perfectly for him. He immediately rushed off to Wal-Mart with my brother to go buy the frog a home, because the frog could not possibly live in a plastic container overnight.
While David was in the yard looking for the appropriate grasses and mulch for the frogs new habitat I was given the job of keeping an eye on the frog. I held the container he was in and he tried to jump a few times which prompted me to shriek since I did not want the frog to jump out and be forced to pick it up before he ran off behind the couch and made his froggy self a new home. Well, when David came in and found out what I had done he was convinced that I had traumatized Madeline by my shrieking and had scarred her for life, so I was forced to hold the frog to prove that they arent scary and that mommy should not have been shrieking at the sight of it.
So, now we have to find a place to put the gigantic aquarium that David bought for the frogapparently one frog needs 10 whole gallons to himself. I am also going to have to try to convince Madeline that holding the frog is special Daddy/Madeline time and that Mommy will not be picking that thing up. Having David put it in my hand wasnt too bad, but I dont think I can bring myself to pick it up.
So, if anyone is in need of some babysitters just let me knowI can give you a great referral. After this past babysitting job I think they will be looking for a new family to babysit for!
Here are some pictures for your viewing pleasure.

Heres an article on the subject
I say to all WOMM companies its time to fess up and be honest. The things you do arent natural and therefore cant be called WOMM. Just start calling your company a Marketing firm or Buzz agency. But that would put you in a big competitive category wouldnt it?
Here are two examples;
BuzzAgent calls themselves a WOMM company. You can sign up with them on their website to receive stuff from their clients (the advertisers). So I did. I signed up for the Hornitos Tequila campaign, and got my free kit. Then Im supposed to go to the BuzzAgent website and report how many I had about Hornitios. You know how many I had? ZERO. But I reported many conversations. Surely they were going to follow-up with me (at least that was the test). Nothing ever happened. BuzzAgent took all my fake conversations and reported those to their client. Now multiply that by how many people participated and what do you have? A big pile of horse shit!
How does BuzzAgent report this bogus data? How do they confirm conversations actually took place? Is there some mysterious honesty statistic that they base their strategy on? Like 88% of people wont make up bull shit because its BuzzAgent?
Bogus all of it.
This is an example of what I consider bad WOMM because you cant possibly measure it. Not unless youre willing to give everyone a lie detector test. Its a land of candy canes and snow flakes.
My next example is Brains on Fire. Another WOMM company. They set up a program for a company called Fiskars called the Fiskateers. This is where several bloggers are PAID to talk about their love for Fiskars. The entire strategy and tactics were created by Brains on Fire. Heres my take on it;
This is what I consider a good example of WOMM. The program is not real, honest word of mouth obviously because it didnt ever happen on its own by true brand ambassadors. Brains on Fire thunk it up and executed it. But it prompted others to join the Fiskateer group which ultimately resulted in word of mouth. I call this a WOMM Nudge. Nudging is cool especially if youre honest about it.
But is Brains on Fire a WOMM company? Hell no. Theyre a marketing company.
There is no such thing as a Word of Mouth Marketing company. Its impossible because everything they do is not natural. Its no different than good traditional advertising is it? You get people talking about a company in hopes of making them customers.
