The Heisman Memorial Trophy, without a doubt the most hyped and over-analyzed individual award in all of sports, will be given out tonight. TV networks love the Heisman trophy because it gives them hours upon hours of material to babble about instead of doing something productive, which is why I've grown to dislike the Heisman Trophy over the years. The more they talk about it every single damn week, the less I seem to enjoy it.
The three finalists this year are all Quarterbacks for three of the most visible powerhouse teams in the country. Last year's winner, Tim Tebow, will try to become the second ever two time winner, and I think he's got a better chance than most people realize. The betting odds show Sam Bradford as the favorite, followed by Colt McCoy and then Tebow. McCoy and Bradford have had the advantage of ABC covering the Big-12 South every Saturday night for what seems like the last 2 months, and that's just the kind of national media exposure which would make either one a shoo-in. But you can have only one shoo-in, and adding a second makes both into shoo-outs.
The problem the other two contenders have is that they are basically the same candidate, ie the star QB of a Big-12 South power. Tebow, of course, is basically the same except that he's the star QB of an SEC power, and like many elections before it this one will have as much to do with geography as with worthiness.
In order to win the Heisman, typically you need full support from the voters in your geographic region plus a smattering of support from other pockets of the country. Tim Tebow's advantage is that he is basically the one and only shining star from the SEC. All the SEC voters will vote for him first, and anyone looking in at the SEC will vote for him before anyone else in the Conference. Colt and Bradford, however, will be fighting over the same base of voters and they're likely to split them. Adding to their disadvantage is the fact that the Big-12 has a number of other big name stars, including Graham Harrell, Mike Crabtree, Zac Robinson and Chase Daniel, who won't win but will pick away even more votes from Bradford and/or McCoy.
Maybe I'll be proven wrong, but it seems pretty obvious how the votes will split. If Bradford does win, it will basically be a result of his performance against over matched Missouri in the Big-12 Championship game, the last big game in the voters minds. If that's the case I'd be especially pissed if I were a Texas fan, since they had as much of a claim to be in that game as Oklahoma (more so in my opinion). So not only has the BCS screwed Texas out of a division title, Big-12 Title, and trip to the National Championship game, but it also screwed Colt McCoy out of a chance to win the Heisman which was instead afforded to Bradford.

Nearly 17 million people in the United States have acne, making it the most common skin disease. Acne affects almost all teenagers as well as a growing number of adults. It attacks all kinds of skin - with little regard to race or gender - on the face, neck, chest, back, shoulders, and upper arms. It can take the form of whiteheads, blackheads, pimples, nodules and cysts ? even permanent scars. Often, acne clears up after several years, even without treatment. Sometimes, however, action needs to be taken.
Acne is formed when skin cells inside hair follicles shed too fast and clump together, plugging up the follicle and causing a pimple. While mostly genetic, acne can be aggravated by any combination of stress, hormonal activity, hyperactive sebaceous glands, accumulation of dead skin cells, bacteria in the pores, skin irritation or scratching of any sort, anabolic steroids, medications containing halogens (iodides, chlorides, bromides), moisturizer overuse, hair removal, lithium, barbiturates, androgens, or exposure to high levels of chlorine compounds.
Many acne sufferers think they have no recourse but to wait it out and pray that theirs is not a severe case. Today, an overwhelming variety of preventions and treatments exist to combat every kind of acne, from the humblest of whiteheads to the most vicious cystic inflammations. From kitchen to pharmacy to natural food store to dermatologist?s office, there are dozens and dozens of treatment routes you can take, depending on your case of acne.
Over-the-counter topical treatments are your first line of defense against acne outbreaks. Benzoyl peroxide is the most popular chemical for this type of treatment, coming in such sommonly known brands as Clearasil, Oxy, and Neutrogena. It is important to treat acne early on, as all treatments are actually preventions against later outbreaks. For more severe cases, there are oral and topical prescription medications, as well as traditional or laser surgery.
Acne Treatment Info provides detailed information on the best acne treatments, including laser acne treatment, and scar treatment, as well as adult, natural, home treatment, and more. Acne Treatment Info is the sister site of Microdermabrasion Web.

In a new movie, that is.
Hilary Swank has signed to star in The Resident, about a woman who moves into a Brooklyn loft and discovers that her landlord is interested in more than the rent.
What's special about this film is that it's the first new production from Hammer Films in decades. The Brit producer was famed for reinventing the horror genre in the late 1950s, making stars of unknown actors like Christopher Lee and Peter Cushing in classic films like The Horror of Dracula and The Curse of Frankenstein. Hammer also made the iconic 1966 Raquel Welch film One Million Years, B.C. If you're old enough, you remember the fur bikini.
The Resident begins shooting in May.

It seems hard to credit that a week ago praises were sung following a solid performance and good away win at West Ham. Fast forward and the criticisms that stung the players following the draw against Tottenham have grown. In between the midweek fixture and this one, Adebayor and Wenger both came out and essentially said that lessons had to be learned, the players were united and passionate in their aspirations towards winning the title.
Right now, those words seem very hollow indeed. They talk the talk but when it comes to walking, all of them are moving in the opposite direction to that which is required to become champions. At this moment in time, I see no improvement in the mental strength of the players from the end of the match at St. Andrews. The same crushed feeling seems to have set in from midweek, similar in that a winning position was thrown away through their own mistakes.
They have not become bad players overnight and their talents should not be doubted, technically at least. That said the first half yesterday leaves that open to question, failing to overcome the more limited abilities of the Stoke team. The last word in the previous sentence is crucial as to why this game was lost: teamwork. Desire. Spirit. All of these were absent in the opening forty-five minutes. Possession may have been hugely in Arsenal’s favour but without the drive or desire to create chances, it is a pointless statistic.
Stoke had that missing from Arsenal in abundance. It is easier to raise your game against ‘big’ opponents, psychologically, but the mark of champions is to play at a consistently high level whomever you are faced with. The current squad do not have that ability. Is it age? Is it experience? Is it something that will dog the majority of them throughout their careers and prevent them from getting the rewards with Arsenal? If so, it casts a huge shadow over The Emirates.
It was not surprising to see van Persie drop to the bench yesterday but in some respects, it was a choice that I think Arsene got horribly wrong. The lack of width is not an issue in itself but if the wide midfielders are going to be central players, then there needs to be guile up front. Bendtner does possess that aspect in his game but van Persie is more effective in the second striker role. Arguably, the Dane has the physical presence to counter the hosts defence but sometimes that need is overstated for forward. Arsene may have more options in his forward line these days but he is desperately in need of some inspiration on the pitch. Consecutive Man of the Match performances suggested that the Dutchman was the likely to provide it.
As it is van Persie finds himself sitting in the corner, wearing a conical hat with a large, red capital ‘D’ on it. There is something inherent in the skilful player, not exclusively a Dutch characteristic although they seem more prone to ‘hot-headedness’ than others, that brings forth a rashness, apparently making them more prone to ‘moments of madness’. Arsene’s post-match assertion that it was not a red card might have been true in the days of Lawton and co; in the 21st century it is as much an instant dismissal as it had been in the last thirty years of the 20th.
It was little surprise that the two goals came from Stoke’s potent attacking weapon, the Rory Delap long throw. Toure was comprehensively beaten in the air by Fuller and the goal inevitable. That both goals came from the same source suggests a fundamental issue was not dealt with properly in training. Gallas was known not to be fit and it is not a unique problem that Stoke posed.
There are a number of teams in the division who will seek to exploit this weakness, enough to have warranted some attention to this aspect in the summer months. It has not been and my concern is that this weakness is fundamentally undermining the team’s confidence. They know that Arsenal lack aerial ability at the back – Silvestre does not solve the problem – and Arsenal know it too. It is this that is the damaging point. If the rest of team transmit nerves in that situation, edginess manifests itself in poor positional play. That suggests a lack of defensive discipline.
Arguments about how Arsene should have signed a commanding centre back in the summer to deal with such dangers are coming back to haunt him. Toure was caught hopelessly exposed from the throw; Fuller got goal side of him and out-muscled the Arsenal captain. The error is schoolboy defending and not that which is expected from a vastly experienced player. If the first was a poor goal to concede, the second was worse. In both instances, the ball travelled a long way. For the second so did Olofinjana, coming from level with the penalty spot to chest and chin the ball home.
In both case, Almunia should have come for the ball, if necessary clattering players en route. His confidence is not quite in pieces following Wednesday but certainly hanging together by a loose thread. Were it not for Clichy, the deficit would have been worse before the interval. This is one area that perplexes me about the opener. Where were the defenders on the posts? For corners and freekicks, they are there. Why not for a throw that you know is going to be as effective, if not more so, than one of the other set-plays.
There is a huge amount of work to be done this week with little time to do so given the fixture lists. Changes need to be made to snap the inconsistency out of the players, to freshen things up. I do not subscribe to the idea put forward some are tired. If that is the case then something is wrong with the stamina-training regime.
At the end of the day though, Tottenham have saved the squad’s bacon this morning. Their late winner means the gap to the top is still six points. Disconcertingly, Arsenal’s form is so hotchpotch that any closure is likely to be lost within a fortnight. If this is sorted out then the season can get back on course.
‘til Tomorrow.

Clean and wearing a new skirt, Demi joins us for a great movie (Secret Life of Bees). She's crying before the movies starts....the trailer for Marley And Me has her in tears. (I must admit, I was teary, too.) But something in the movie hit her deep in her hollow core....she too, just wants to be loved. By the time we got her into the car, she was a wreck. We went to dinner just the two of us, with Demi Less staying behind in the car. (Her choice.)
About the time Mr. Zoom and I were served dinner, the Belushi Brothers walked into the room and took a table close to us. I looked at Mr Z and he looked and me and said....no, don't do it.
But of course, I did.
Me: Excuse me. Do you 2 believe in fate? In Kismet?
Elwood: Of course.
Jake: What do you mean?
Me: Well, I have a friend in the car who would love to meet you. She is recently interested in men in sunglasses. And if you don't mind, I'd love to take a picture.
Jake and Elwood: Sure, bring her in.
Demi straightens her skirt, dries her eyes, and walks into the restaurant. I snap some photos of the two of them with both of the Blues Brothers, but have the camera on MANUAL focus. What an idiot. I finally snapped this photo of just Jake and Demi.
Just then, Jake turns to Mr. Zoom.
Jake: [fake accent] How much for the little girl? How much for the women?
Mr. Zoom: What?
Jake: Your women. I want to buy your women. The little girl, your daughters... sell them to me. Sell me your children.
*Note#1 If you have no idea what I am talking about, you need to see the movie (Blues Brothers) and or read my account of Demi Less.
*Note #2: Many thanks to BOTH couples in the restaurant, who graciously allowed me to interrupt their dinners for these photos. Many apologies for taking so MANY pics...I didn't realize I had it on manual focus. See below. Couple #1, I hope you had fun at your Halloween party.
